Newbie needs a good Android tablet

Dear Friends:

I need a tablet and am very intrigued by Nvidia's Shield Tablet K1. Please pardon me some dumb questions I have. How secure is Android from malware? Is there anti-malware for it? If I purchase an Android tablet will I have to root it, and what's "root," anyway? I'll be visiting family but they don't have a wireless router, so must I go to a McDonalds or some other free-to-the-public Wi-Fi spots? If so, how securely can I access my financials through an Android tablet?...
