We've seen this reported around the web before, but I have it repeatedly occurring on my GPE device (XT1032). The battery, regardless power level, will instantly drop to 1% or 0% and the device turns off.
Connecting power, the device charges for a short time through 2%, 3%, etc until about 6-7% when it jumps back up to reading 100% and apparently stops charging. It has been determined that this is a failure of the device to identify the proper battery level. The overwhelming recommended...
