What are PokeStops in Pokemon Go

PokeStops are locations on the map that you visit to get cool Pokemon items, mainly PokeBalls. This is what they look like on the map:

From a far they look like floating blue cubes but once they're in range, they open up showing a large PokeBall symbol.
You can always click on the PokeStop to see the location but you can't interact with it if you're not in range of it.
