Moving apps to the SD Card

I need some basic, simple advice on how to move apps and data from my new Samsung Tab A to its SD Card. I have two apps for this purpose but so far have not got them working. Nothing seems to happen after clicking 'move to SD', the apps are still where they were and the Card does not list them. The Card is shown as almost empty (except that one storage app says it is now half full, but not what with!)
