Android App Promotion is compulsory or not?

Guys today i will tell you about my experience of my android apps performance on google play store.
in the beginning of 2017, i have created more than 3 android apps and placed them on play store. My apps only got 100+ installs after the 2 months there i came to this conclusion that there is very tough competition in android market. And you need to promote your app to stay alive in this market. I tried free promotion methods but there were no result.
