Buy Unlocked or Verizon Version

I am thinking of buying the unlocked GS9 Plus from Samsung and using it on Verizon instead of buying the Verizon version of the phone. I have never owned an unlocked phone before.

What's the advantages/disadvantages of buying the unlocked version?
I am assuming that the unlocked version will work on the Verizon network.
