Will root do anything to my battery?

I know that rooting only unlocks the ability to do certain things but on my old phone when I rooted it the battery was horrible, I don't know if it is because it was a bad phone or root. I have a Nexus 6 and I'm wondering if rooting could make my battery worse, I wont be installing a custom rom, just using root only apps that don't run in the background.
