poor wifi on alacatel onetouch idol3

Newly purchased idol onetouch3, updated to 6.01 by ota. I have started using my phone and it is totally up to date as far as I know. The wifi reception seems really "weak" compared to several android phones and tablets i have had in the past few years. I tried toggling wifi and forgetting and reconnecting to my network with no change. Any thoughts?
