Does rooting smartphone will erase data?

I would like to know if rooting will erase all the saved data i.e, contacts, saved wifi passwords etc. I'm thinking of rooting my desire hd without installing a customised ROM because there is an app which requires rooting in order to know the saved wifi passwords in my smartphone.
