Volume buttons not working in stock recovery. Nexus 5

So, this is the second time I've seen this on two separate Nexus 5 devices.

I am using the nexus toolkit to update a friends N5 to the latest version of android because for some reason his device is missing the option to update in the "about phone" menu (No idea why).
