When you go buy the phone:

Just ask them to take you to a dark room (Bathroom) and go into the secret menu via the dialer. That'll give you the exact quality of what to expect before you even leave.

*#546368#*998# (Or whichever model, in my case it's 932, so put that instead of 998)

SVC Menu > LCD Test > Automatic or manual test is fine but if you've got screen turn off at 30 seconds or less it'll turn off before it's done. So best to do manual or turn up the time to keep screen on a tad...
