Looking to buy first smartphone, what phone meets this criteria?

I'm 26, I never owned a smartphone and I'm thinking about joining the crowd. I got my first cell phone (LG 300G) for free in 2010 through the government's lifeline (obama) phone program. I'm getting kind of tired of using cheap candy bar phones.
