Can i root s6 g920a nougat if it's unlocked or downgraded

I have an s6 g920a from AT&T. Its on 7.0 nougat. I'm in the middle of switching it from AT&T to safelink (Trac phone). This requires an unlock code from AT&T which is pending for approval now. I do not know if this unlock code unlocks the bootloader? I REALLY want to root this phone. If I have to downgrade to marshmallow or something else I'm totally fine with that. I just need help rooting this thing it seems impossible. I am not tech savvy so bear that in mind please. Please help me...
