Pixel 2 XL Fingerprint Unlock

I'm discovering that while using a fingerprint to unlock the phone works very well, when using a fingerprint to unlock 3rd-party apps (1Password and PayPal) it usually fails over and over (once in a while it will work).

I never had this problem with the Pixel XL, but it's a constant problem on the Pixel 2 XL.

It's not related to grip or finger positioning because I can switch off the phone without moving my fingerprint finger and the phone unlocks lightning fast on the first try, but...
