Need phone for audio streaming

Here's the situation: I like to drive a lot, and while I am driving like listening to streaming audio. The problem is that I can't get my phones (Moto G4 and G5) to reliably respond to voice commands. I've got them set up using Google Assistant and Android Auto to come alive when I say "OK Google" in all circumstances, which included taking off all security and never allowing the phone to lock, but it does anyway.
