No Notification LED?

I'm struggling to figure out why they are removing the LED... I just send a Nokia 6 back that didn't have one and I'm sending my new Moto Z Play back also. A basic phone should have a notification LED, a battery condition icon and a 4G icon. How do you know if your getting 4G or not? I've configured the phone with AT&T and still nothing but a variable signal icon, no "H", no LTE no 4G indicators. It's supposed to be a U.S. version, but I'm told that some of the features it's missing is...
