moto x pure gmail sync problem--not the usual one

i set up sync for seven days only, but it retrieves almost a month of mail.
if i try to delete the mail, each one i delete is immediately replaced by older mail.
i have tried shutting off sync in gmail.
i have tried shutting off sync altogether in manage accounts.
does not solve the problem.
the only thing that works to get rid of all the mail is to remove the account and then add it again, but then it syncs again though it is set not to--and all of that old mail comes back.
