Moto g4 advice please

Hello
My friends son is determined he wants a Motorola he can't afford a Pixel or Nexus 6p he is a pure Android geek
Now I haven't had a moto since the first one (loved that little phone)
I now have a s7 edge (quite at the back)!
However he absolutely hates it....I really worry about that boy
So my question is the Moto g4 as close to pure Android for the price.. Also he loves his gaming and customisation
I've read some really great things about this device...and I have always had a soft...
