Running App as a Background Service

Hello folks, can anyone advise if there is a way to run an app as a service in Android? I have a Redmi Note 3 (MIUI 8) and often find the need to run certain apps in the background.

For instance, I use the app Adguard quite often to block ads from all the apps so this would be running always. However, when I clear the running programs (by clicking on the left most menu button and then tapping on "X"), all apps including Adguard closes.
