Advice on modifying a mobile apk for AndroidTV. (a bit related to Codebase tutorial)

I need to convert an apk for androidTV.
I tried learning from codelabs. It's a great tutorial.

you can find it by googling- "Adding Leanback to your androidtv app"

But the sample code given there (in 6 checkpoint to show the effect of each of the 6 stages of development) just does not show the diferences on AVD.

Has anyone tried that tutorial?
