How do I make split screen mode work?

On my Samsung Tab A with Marshmallow how do I get the split screen to work. I can create the split screen with two compatibe apps, I can select an image or text, I can move them about but so far I have not been able to paste from one half screen to the other. Either nothing happens or sometimes I get a popup saying that the function is not available ----- why?
