Why are smartphone manufacturers lowering the spec of phones?

It is quite alarming to see companies shifting the spec of phones. Recently was observing the G5 Plus, without viewing the spec, I thought to myself that this phone is a must buy for anyone looking for a budget phone, then discovered that Lenovo added and subtracted. For example, the G4 Plus has a 5.5" display and 16mp camera while the G5 Plus will have 5.2" display and 12mp camera. It all started from the iPhone where they kept the 12mp from the 6 to the 7. Other companies began following....
