Bluetooth pairing to watch and car

Hi guys,
I'm looking at buying an Android smartwatch, deciding which to choose.
But first I have a general question.

If I am wearing a smartwatch with bluetooth connection to the phone in my pocket, what happens when I get into
the car with its bluetooth handsfree phone kit? Do they both connect or does one take priority?
