any way to prevent email client app from downloading my entire inbox?

I just purchased a new Galaxy S7 (T-Mobile), my first smartphone. I'm in the process of setting up email accounts. Not surprisingly, the Android client app wants to download my entire inbox. The problem is, I have a limited data allowance under my grandfathered plan (only 30MB) so I'm hoping there's a way to stop Android from downloading messages I've already read.
