External hard drive showing as empty

Hi! So recently I got an adapter for my phone in order to insert USB drives into it. And regular USB drives work fine. But when I try to connect my external hard drive it shows up but shows no files(it says it's empty though it's almost full and the files show up on my PC). How do I make them show up on my Android device?
