Note 9 apps overlap settings?

I just came from a Note 4 that had a app side bar. I now have a Note 9 with an edge panel. What I miss about the note 4 that I have not figured out how to do with my new note 9 is to answer text with a pop up message box. I use to watch games on my old note 4 in full screen and my wife would text me.
