New York Times virus?

I keep getting the New York Times app showing popup on notifications drop down. But I have not installed this app and don't think I ever have.
When I tap on the notification, the screen flashes and that's it. This only happens now and again. I keep meaning to take a screen shot,but haven't yet.
Any suggestions. Have I got a virus?
